Ranking tacking for LLMs & ChatGPT + 3 ideas for ranking higher

From WP Speed Fix Newsletter

I emailed back in May about ranking higher in ChatGPT and one the key factors for exposure there is making sure you’re indexed in Bing. ChatGPT uses Bing as its search engine by default so it’s key that have an accurate Bing Maps listing if you’re a physical business and using Bing Shopping if you’re an ecommerce brand and have Bing Webmaster Tools setup.

Here’s the link to that email

We’ve been experimenting with a few techniques and tools for pushing rankings and exposure in ChatGPT and LLMs further.

Here’s 3 quick ideas to help you rank higher in ChatGPT and LLMs in general:

Setup basic mention monitoring with Promptwatch – this is an excellent tool for monitoring mentions in LLMs and has a free 7 day trial to allow you to test drive before making a commitment.

  • Audit your site with the free Promptwatch AI SEO Audit Tool – this one is completely free and takes about 60 seconds. If you’re like most sites it’ll recommend getting some basics in place like an llms.txt file

  • Make sure the schema markup is correct on your site. Schema markup is hidden code on your site that provides additional information and meta data for search engines like your business phone number, address, your type of business and so forth.

SEO plugins typically insert basic schema markup site wide so make sure you go through your plugin settings and make sure they’re complete and accurate.

ChatGPT and LLMs use schema markup to understand more about your pages and your site so it’s an easy one to leverage.

We typically use and recommend Rankmath as our WordPress SEO plugin of choice especially over Yoast. Rankmath has a bunch of minor features that make it 1 or 2% better than other plugins and in such a competitive SEO landscape. That small difference makes a big difference!

One think we like about Rankmath is that it’s quite good at schema markup especially if you have the Pro version.

We’ve been taking schema markup one step further and for important pages we want to rank, for example Services pages, we’ve been asking ChatGPT what schema markup we can use and what’s missing. Example below!

ChatGPT actually generates the schema code for us based on the information we give it. Sometimes it’s not quite right so we run it through the schema markup validator from Google and tweak appropriately before embedding on the site:
